FIFA World Cup: An Introduction
The FIFA World Cup is the final round of a competition held every four years. The competition is open to each FIFA national association, and nearly two years of playoffs brings the field down to 48 teams. The World Cup is the most-watched sporting event in the world.
Tournament Format, and how we play the Prediction game
The tournament begins with twelve groups of four teams each, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for single-game knockout play along with the eight best third-place teams. Each team plays each other once in the group stage, for a total of three games. Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw. Thereafter, the 32 teams advancing to the knockout stages play single-elimination games until the World Cup winner is determined.
Your assignment, in the Group Stage, is to pick the finishing order of each group. Your score will be based on how close you are to predicting the correct order and also whether you chose the correct teams to qualify for the Round of 32.
In subsequent rounds, your task will be to pick the winning team and the number of goals that will be scored by both teams in each matchup.
